Relationships can be full of passion and romance. We see this all the time in movies and tv shows. But because we all love differently, relationships in real life also come with a range of oddities and harsh trials.
Here 6 on-screen relationships that paint a (somewhat) realistic view of romance.

1. Astrid & Hiccup, How To Train Your Dragon
Here we have the classic trope of the main characters falling in love. But the How To Train Your Dragon movies put a spin on this movie cliche. It’s realistic in that both Astrid and Hiccup don’t bring unnecessary drama to their relationship, nor do they spend time on grand gestures of romance. They simply are in love.
Unlike other movie romances, they are a great example of where two unique individuals bring their quirks and strengths to the table. Not one person is more dominant over the other.

2. Pongo and Perdita, 101 Dalmatians
Yes they’re not humans – but Pongo and Perdita are an adorable pair. Not only do they work together to raise 15 Dalmatian puppies. They watch each other’s backs when it comes to fighting off the dog-napping villains and keeping their family safe.
Pongo and Perdita’s relationship is not complex: they are protective, loving parents. And when faced with the stressful task of rescuing their pups, they rely on each other to conquer all trials.

3. Rosemary and Dill, Easy A
They are the doting parents to Olive and Chip. Yes, these are (movie) human beings.
Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson bring their A-game in Easy A. They play a delightful couple, whose mature love is passionate and fun. Unlike most movie couples, they truly care for (and like) their kids. The pair even offer support and compassion for their daughter Olive who is caught in a slut-shaming drama.
Note: their sexual energy and public displays of affection is right up the Morticia-and-Gomez-Addams-alley!

4. Morticia and Gomez, The Addams Family
Speak of the devils!
Morticia and Gomez Addams has been regarded online as the most stable, healthiest and passionate relationship in movie history.
Not only are they just so into each other, they have a great level trust. They both know that their partner will never speak badly of them behind their back. This means that they build their relationship on honesty, open communication and lots of love – in the form of physical affection and words of affirmation.

5. King Leonidas and Queen Gorgo, 300
Okay, okay hear me out!
King Leonides and Queen Gorgo’s relationship is a symbol of strength during a time of war and chaos. Gorgo is seen as a supportive wife, who also plays a vital role in Spartan politics, especially when she lobbies for aid from Greek cities.
According to Greek historian Herodotus, during Gorgo’s reign as Queen, a message was sent to the Spartan court. The message was on a wooden tablet, covered in wax, in order to disguise the message below. It was Gorgo who ultimately informed the King to remove the wax and reveal the message: the Persian ruler, Xerxes was planning to invade.

6. Queen Elinor and King Fergus, Brave
While Queen Elinor is portrayed as the controlling mother, and King Fergus as the easy-go-lucky father: the two have a strong bond as a couple. So strong in fact, that even after Elinor is turned into a bear, it is evident how much they care about each other.
In terms of movie parents, we initially see them as obstacles that the main character needs to overcome. But in Brave, neither the parents or the kids are right. Each party ends up learning from the other, developing a deep understanding and making compromises when necessary.
This only becomes reality when Elinor and Fergus team up to keep their family together: through open communication and reconciliation.
