Hubby and I love to watch movies and series together. While our tastes in entertainment are very different, we often find common ground in interesting picks. Hubby loves all things anime, action and comedy. And I prefer mystery, adventure and thrills. Presenting a random list of things we’ve watched in 2024 + our reviews.
This will be the first time hubby has been featured on a post (yay), so please leave an encouraging comment, and your best movie and TV show of 2024, below! (this might be part 1.)
Rise of the Shield Hero (Season 1)
His: The story is good, but I wish “The Shield Hero” had better fighting capabilities. Season 2 does not live up to the hype of Season 1.
Hers: A classic tale of a broody protagonist who is betrayed by the masses, and shunned. But is ‘saved/softened’ by a cheery female support character who recognises the kindness in him! Season 1 gave some amazing lore bits, but Season 2 just felt so boring.
Delicious in Dungeon
His: Very fun and light-hearted, would definitely recommend it. When you think the show has nothing more to offer, a darker twist keeps you locked in. Season 2 cannot come soon enough!
Hers: Love, love, love! Highly recommend! It’s quirky, funny, full of mythical lore and adventure. This show reminds me of an old-timey children’s book: everything seems all light and fun until s#!t hits the fan, and complete chaos (and darkness) ensues. Excited for Season 2!
Talk about a throwback: 8 Series as wack as 2020…
The Maze Runner Franchise
His: This franchise was not for me. The action was great, but I would have preferred to see more of the different ‘mazes’ as the movies progressed. I probably should have watched it when the hype was there.
Hers: What can I say? It’s a teen adventure film from 2014. It is surprisingly thrilling, and enjoyable to watch as you relax on a weekend evening. Binge this to understand what (in part) shaped Gen Z.
Tokyo Ghoul (Season 1+2)
His: This anime takes me back to the glory days of Death Note and Guilty Crown, just when you think things cannot get any worse for Kaneki, it does. The line “count backwards from 1000 in increments of 7” will haunt you long after you’ve watched this. Don’t crack your knuckles too much.
Hers: Not my type of show. Found it way too gory. But I enjoyed the dynamics of this ‘special breed of human’ (the Ghouls) – the politics and in-fighting – and their want to be part of ‘normal’ society. Very emotional, but can be a bit heavy to enjoy at night or at the end of the day.
Griselda
His: A very interesting show, but still need to complete it. But has a very good plot with interesting characters. I would recommend it.
Hers: We didn’t watch the entire show, but it is something I would want to pick up again, and complete. The story will often leave you breathless or in tears. Sofia Vergara’s acting was top-tier! This is what we mean when we say we want strong female characters!
Spy x Family
His: A cute slice-of-life anime. I’m more excited for Black Clover
Hers: Comedy? Check! Wholesome? Check! Unlikely romances? Check! What’s not to love!?
Divergent
His: I found this movie very boring, I did not enjoy it. Maybe if it was an anime I would be more likely to recommend it.
Hers: ‘She’s not like the other girls!’ A great movie (and franchise) to binge-watch on the weekend when you want to rot in bed and do absolutely nothing. Also, explains many Gen Z women’s thinking 😛
Bob Marley: One Love
His: I was so excited about this movie, and it left much to be desired. I would’ve liked it to focus on Bob Marley’s music process a bit more, which was the highlight of the movie for me. The storyline was very confusing, I would have preferred if this was a series instead of a feature film.
Hers: I became obsessed with the music in the film. But Kingsley Ben-Adir’s acting felt forced. The storyline was all over the place and I wished it paid more attention to relationship building between the characters than just focusing on how fame ‘corrupted’ the famous reggae musician. Check out my full review here.
Black Clover
His: Asta and the Black Bulls, a story of a boy born into a magical world without magic. This anime has to be on my top 10 greatest anime of all time. It is so good that the filler episodes are even enjoyable. I NEED MORE EPISODES! The story of Asta and Yuno has begun to expand, and we anime watchers are speculating what could happen next. Bring back, Black Clover!!!
Hers: If you struggle with hitting the gym consistently, working hard towards your goals or pushing past your limits: WATCH BLACK CLOVER! The action scenes are thrilling, and each season is unique yet beautifully adds to the overarching story of the anime. It uses comedy so well, and the character-building is intentional and natural.
Lord of the Rings Franchise
His: An excellent franchise with interesting lore, that I highly recommend. I am Gandalf’s biggest fan! After you watch this, you need to give The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power a go. It offers some major lore points and ties these movies nicely together.
Hers: Believe them when they say these movies are looonngg. Grab the starters, mains, dessert and snacks – of course, lots of water – because you’re in for a real movie marathon. If you can get over the length, the story is great, and I can appreciate what they gifted nerds of the early 2000s. Also, Samwise Gamgee is BEST BOY and the definition of a true friend!
Reviving the classics: Bye, bye Russel Crowe there’s a new Gladiator in Rome! (+trailer)
Umbrella Academy (Season 4)
His: Sooo boring. Bringing Ben back felt like a waste and did not drive the plot at all. Can’t even remember this one.
Hers: This season’s lacklustre plot left me wanting more. Nothing made me WANT to watch the next episode. I was just too curious to see IF something good would happen. You are better off watching Seasons 1 – 3 and living with that cliffhanger.
The Gentlemen
His: Solid 10/10!
Hers: English gangs, drug dealing and a bit of posh. Enjoyed this series so much, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys elaborate schemes, heists and views of the English countryside.
We’ve got many more movies and series under our belts, so let us know if you would like to hear more about that. Leave your 2024 Best and Worst in the comments below.
