I’ve been in various roles, at different companies. And even worked a bit for myself. 🌐💸
And while being punctual and meeting your deadlines ⏲️ are very important in the workplace, I do believe there are some soft skills that are equally valuable🫂 .
These make your time at a job – and as an employee – smoother and efficient 🏢 .
📍Be easy to work with
This for me is the most underrated skill. And I think some people, for various reasons, forget how their personality or character at work, affects others.
And while the workplace is intended for professional relationships and getting things done – your attitude can truly affect how fellow employees get those things done.
Are you the reason they suffer with anxiety on a Sunday night? 😵
Are you over critical to a point where nothing gets agreed on, therefore tasks get delayed?
Maintain a sense of ease. Chillax! Make your fellow colleagues feel comfortable around you. Allow them to do the work they were employed to do, and to be honest with you and to trust you.
📍Adaptable
Things happen. Sometimes really bad things happen. And when it does, how easily and confidently can you adapt to those situations ☸️ – without throwing someone under the bus, or freaking out?
If you’re someone who gets easily stressed out or frightened, there are many resources that can help manage your anxiety. Seek help with a counselor or therapist. 🗣️
Plus! Education is truly empowering. Learn more about your role and don’t be afraid to pick up new skills. Short courses, postgraduate learning and workshops are incredibly VALUABLE (more in SKILL 6)!
📍Read the room
Don’t underestimate the power of reading the room. Pick up on weird vibes before anyone says something. 👀
This is a skill that allows you to gauge the energy and mood of others, helping you avoid those potential awkward moments. Or possibly offending someone. This underrated skill is important for no other reason except to build healthy relationships with coworkers and clients 🤝 – and build trust.
Top tip: if you’re uncertain, always ask now and then how the other person feels and pay attention to their tone and body language.
📍Refrain from office gossip
Gossip is juicy…until you’re the topic😶. Do not fall for the perception that you’ll gain friends through talking smack about others.
I think there’s a big difference between learning about a company or colleague, and gossiping about someone behind their back while pretending to like them to their face 🌝🌚.
It can be a hard skill to implement, but trust me, it makes your experience more healthy.
📍Overcommunicate
Rather ask too many questions, instead of paying the price for being in the dark. Overcommunication means sending multiple updates to a manager, customer or colleague. In some cases it may seem excessive 🗞️, but if you ever work with someone who tends to gaslight or lie, this is a skill that will protect you and keep the work flowing.
This can also ensure that there is little to no room for misunderstandings 🙅 or vagueness. Remember to keep your updates brief and focused. And make room for the other person to respond and share their understanding of the messages.
📍Maintain a growth mindset
You can never know enough 📚. Learning new skills, refining your talents and forming new connections in your network are so important! A growth mindset 🌱 allows you to see opportunity in every difficulty, and helps you remain persistent 🧗 rather than giving up after failures.
And when you receive feedback or criticism, a growth mindset will help you see the value in it rather than taking it as an insult or an attack (if the feedback is meant to be constructive).
Plus! There will always be someone who has achieved wonders in your industry. A growth mindset allows you to feel inspired 🤩 by them, and pushes you to work hard. Keep up that learning attitude!
